We believe this to be a view of the KPH receiving room at Marshall some time after the station moved from Hillcrest. Note that the land line sounder is still present and that an ordinary electric kitchen clock (with no silent period markings!) serves as the station timepiece. The suits and ties are gone but the operator on the left sports a stylish set of sleeve garters.

Once the efficiency of the shortwaves was discovered Dr. Harold Beverage scouted the area for a new shortwave receiving site to replace Marshall. He selected the mesa on the Point Reyes peninsula where this building was constructed. Known as "RS" on the telegraph line, it originally held only the point-to-point receivers while KPH, the maritime station, soldiered on at Marshall. KPH was closed down for the duration of WWII but re-opened in this building in 1946 - much to the dismay of the elite point-to-point men already in residence! Post war KPH occupied the area to the right of the front door in this photo.
