4U Radio Console Photos

After months of work the time finally came to turn on the HF transmitter for a test. This equipment was manufactured in 1944 and had sat unused and neglected in the Mothball Fleet for almost 30 years. Yet when we fired it up for the first time since 1970 it just came to life as if to say "what else did you expect?".
Here Tom Horsfall tunes up the transmitter (note the glowing light bulb dummy load) using the test key on the front panel while keeping a close eye on the meters.
As we brought up the power the meters indicated 1400V DC for the plates and 10V AC for the filaments of the twin 813s.
The 4U console runs on 120V DC ship's power. The voltages for the transmitter are supplied by a motor-generator set that's mounted in the rack beneath the HF transmitter (power from the MG set is shared by the HF and MF transmitters).
