4U Radio Console Photos

After some vigorous yet careful work with the approved cleaner supplied by the museum we were able to remove the first layers of dirt and cigarette smoke. Here the partly cleaned panel of the HF transmitter may be seen and compared with the still to be cleaned portions.

At about this point in the process Richard Dillman wrote an article about our project which appeared in Morsum Magnificat, a British journal devoted to Morse code. He spoke about the "men and the occasional woman" who had taken their place in front of this console and others like it over the decades and how they were all heroes. This article brought an unexpected and very welcome letter.

Olive Roeckner wrote to say "I was one of those occasional women" and explained how she, a Canadian, had to ship out on a Norwegian C1 cargo ship to get a birth as a radio officer (the Canadians did not allow women on their ships). Here is a picture of Olive in front of a Radiomarine 4U radio console, the same model we were working on, just after WWII. We have kept in contact with Olive ever since.
